About us

Eugene McCarney was one of Shropshire amateur cricket's most recognised players.

His career saw him play throughout Shropshire, Cheshire and Pembrokeshire for over 40 years.

THE MCCARNEY FOUNDATION

About us

In the summer of 1979 he was gifted a cricket bat from a player in his hometown of Pembroke, which started his cricketing journey.

In August 2020, Eugene passed away after a brave and short battle with liver cancer.

THE MCCARNEY FOUNDATION

About us

In May 2021 his wife and fellow trustees launched The McCarney Foundation.

Our goal is to help children and young people start their own journey into the world of competitive cricket, or his welsh passion of rugby, by offering them the same simple gift of kindness.

The McCarney Foundation - Coaching

How we can help

The McCarney Foundation aims to provide sporting equipment, coaching, assistance with transport to fixtures and guidance on sports psychology to children and young people whose financial or personal circumstances prevent the opportunity to play either cricket or rugby.

background

Our Founder

A talented, fiercely loyal and focused player, Eugene was quickly picked for home cricket clubs Carew and Pembrokeshire before leaving Wales to start university in Crewe where he was chosen to play university rugby as well as cricket.

He continued cricketing in teams throughout Cheshire and represented the Shropshire County League in representative cricket appearing regularly in touring games and Sunday leagues.  He finally settled in Shropshire and represented Shelton CC  for 10 years.

2019 saw Shelton win the Shropshire County Cricket League Division 1, but it was also to be his last year of playing the game he loved so much.

The trustees want to make sure that his legacy of kindness and positivity lives on by offering others the same opportunities and experiences that were offered to him all those years ago.

Our Trustees

Phil Mold
EVENTS DIRECTOR
Phil and Eugene were friends and work colleagues for over 10 years and participated in some incredible sporting events to help raise vital funds for chosen charities.

They both share a love of the outdoors, preferring the golf course to discuss strategies rather than the office. Phil is working with us on all of our events, marketing, and social media.
Pru McCarney
CEO
Eugene and Pru first met 18 years ago in Telford where they worked together and were married three years later.

Together they have two daughters, Harriet and Georgina, who represent the H&G in our Little Flames Collection. Pru, Harri and Georgie all live together in their forever home in Shifnal, with their dog Gary Barlow.
Jim Cadwallader
vice chairman
Jim has been friends with Eugene for over 20 years, with many of those years spent playing in the same team and clubs.

When he is not playing, watching or discussing cricket in his role as committee member at his club, Jim owns a successful Mortgage Advice Company and lives in Shrewsbury with his Fiancé, Sophie.
Leanne Bailey
CFO
The Bailey and McCarney children spent seven years at school together and Leanne and Pru are firm friends. Working together at the school PTA, they have created firework displays, chartered helicopters and turned the school into Hogwarts.

Leanne lives in Telford with her husband Justin and their son Jake.
Sophie Nicholls
Company secretary
Sophie and Jim first met over seven years ago when she was scoring for a Shropshire cricket team and Jim used the excuse of criticizing her abilities to come over and talk to her.

Miraculously, it worked, and they now live together in Shrewsbury with their son Albie and their dog Chip, who thinks he’s a human.
Marc Oglethorpe
Corporate and Sponsorship
Director for Pembrokeshire
Marc first met Eug in Pembroke where they both played junior league cricket. They continued playing cricket together in different parts of the country for 40 years until retiring from the game last year.

Marc still has strong links with the local cricket and rugby clubs in Pembrokeshire and lives with his wife Jenny and their daughters, Catherine, Lauren and Amelia.
Matt Morris
Corporate and Sponsorship
Director for SHROPSHIRE
Matt and Eugene worked together at Staffline for many years and have been directly involved with the company’s biggest charity events, including hospitality at Aintree, England Vs Australia at The Oval and more recently a team of 11 to play Cricket at Lords.

Matt is currently Club Captain at Shelton Cricket Club and lives in Shrewsbury.
